  • Welcome to the inaugural year of the STRONG Academy!

    Class of 2020

     

    Below is a description of the first years course entitled STRONG 1.  This will set the stage for students in the academy and prepare them to be successful not only in high school but in life thereafter.

    First Semester:Career Choices and Changes

    During the first semester students will learn about career choices, how to create a personal profile, goal setting, job search, and creating a 10-year plan.  The course will encorporate the use of the textbook and workbooks to allow students to search for the type of lifestyle they choose, how to find a career choice that will allow that lifestyle, what colleges will bring about that career, what courses are needed to attain the proper degree/certificate, and finally a ten-year plan to allow students to see a path of how to make all of this occur.

    Course Objectives

    At the completion of this course students will:

    1.      Comprehend essential concepts related to enhancing career choices

    2.      Demonstrate the ability to determine the lifestyle of choice.

    3.      Demonstrate the ability to properly perform a career search.

    4.      Demonstrate the ability to set proper goals and solve problems.

    5.      Demonstrate the ability to properly perform a job search.

    6.      Demonstrate the ability to create and maintain a 10-year plan.


    Second Semester: Health

    Health is a required course that provides a skills-based curriculum that addresses federal and state mandates for instruction, as well as the state framework for health education in California.  The course of study focuses on personal health and wellness, with an emphasis on the development of responsible decision-making skills in relationship to a healthy lifestyle.  Course content includes life skills focused on healthy choices, in the areas of nutrition, fitness, stress management and social/emotional health, substance use and abuse, growth and development, and reproductive health.  The course also explores environmental factors influencing health and healthy lifestyle choices, as well as societal influences and media pressures.


    Course Objectives

    At the completion of this course students will:

    1.      Comprehend essential concepts related to enhancing health.

    2.      Demonstrate the ability to analyze internal and external influences that affect health.

    3.      Demonstrate the ability to access and analyze health information, products, and services.

    4.      Demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health.

    5.      Demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.

    6.      Demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.

    7.      Demonstrate the ability to practice behaviors that reduce risk and promote health.

    8.      Demonstrate the ability to promote and support personal, family, and community health.
