American Literature - Juniors

  • American Literature is a college preparation, literature-based course aimed at developing the students’ reading, listening, writing, and language abilities. It offers juniors a course covering literary genres and terms, composition (including the writing process and various writing domains such as, narrative, critical responses to literature, analytic essays, persuasive essays, primary resources, and technical documents ), grammatical units, oral presentations, vocabulary skills, study skills, and a historical research unit. Lessons are developed with Visalia Unified School District's Eleventh Grade Language Arts Essential Standards and Benchmarks along with Common Core Standards to guide them. The reading text for the class is Holt McDougal  Language of Literature along with a variety of these required novels:

    The Crucible by Arthur Miller

    The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald

    Cannery Row by John Steinbeck

    Catcher in the Rye by J D Salinger
