VUSD Board of Education Receives the LEAD Award!
The California Latino School Boards Association (CLSBA) has announced the Visalia Unified School District Board of Education as a recipient of the 2024 Unity Latino/a Educational Advancement & Distinction (LEAD) Award. This prestigious award recognizes school districts that have demonstrated exceptional unity in leadership, serving students and families through an equity lens, and going above and beyond the call of duty.
The CLSBA is a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring Latino/a students have the best educational opportunities and resources available to succeed. They are committed to meeting the educational needs for all Latino/a students by working with educational organizations and empowering school board members to improve the educational outcomes for Latino/a students in California.
The Role of the Board
The role of the trustees who sit on a locally elected school board is to ensure that school districts are responsive to the values, beliefs and priorities of their communities. The board fulfills this role by performing three major responsibilities. These are setting direction; balancing and approving a district budget; and hiring and being the direct report of their sole employee - the superintendent. Authority is granted to the board as a whole, not each member individually. Therefore, board members fulfill these responsibilities by working together as a governance team with the superintendent to make decisions that will best serve all the students in the community.
