Visalia Unified Celebrates Grand Opening of New Visalia Charter Independent Study High School Campus

On January 27, 2025, Visalia Unified School District (VUSD) held a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony to help welcome staff and students to the new Visalia Charter Independent Study High School. The three buildings totaling 43,261 square feet condense the high school’s east and west campus into one, allowing for streamlining procedures and providing better accessibility of programs to all students.

This campus features 64 classrooms, teacher offices, a testing lab, correction lab, library, student services center, performing arts spaces, assembly hall, and more. This facility will support a variety of classes including math, science, art, culinary, performing arts, and specialized pathways in health sciences such as: Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, and Pharmacy Tech programs. The independent study option gives students an opportunity to thrive in a flexible learning environment.

“As a board, we understand that students learn in many different ways and that success also has many different paths. VCIS gives students a unique opportunity to learn at their own pace, while offering access to extracurricular activities, college courses, and a supportive team of staff. This program also provides essential resources like child care and the flexibility to learn online or in person. As the largest school district in Tulare County, we remain committed to meeting our students where they are, supporting their families, and ensuring their future success–because when students succeed, entire communities succeed,” stated VUSD Board President Joy Naylor.

The project took a little over three years to complete with $14M coming from the district’s 400 fund and site funds. VCIS originally opened its doors over 20 years ago in 2003. Due to growth, the school moved to a campus located on the east side of Visalia in 2010. As students continued to find success through the program, our footprint needed to expand, and the campus expanded to west Visalia in 2019.

“This project is a significant investment that represents our board’s dedication to equitable access to education and opportunities for all students. As we look toward the future of Visalia Unified, the consolidation of both campuses into one made complete sense, logistically, for our staff and students, as well as financial sense for our district,” said Superintendent Shrum.
