Visalia Unified Highlights Power of Community in 60th Year of Unification

The Visalia Unified School District welcomed over 100 community members at Houston Elementary for its annual State of the District event on November 6, 2025, celebrating 60 years of unification and shared commitment to student growth.

The event highlighted how strong schools and strong communities go hand in hand — emphasizing both the impact community members have on students and how thriving schools strengthen the broader Visalia community.

“It is up to us, the Visalia Unified community, to make these dreams come true for every student. Dreams of becoming astronauts, doctors,

teachers, police officers, and FBI agents, who launch their careers, build families, and continue to elevate our Visalia community,” said Superintendent Shrum in his speech.

More than 200 industry partners help support student achievement - from hosting interns and mentoring youth to supporting after-school programs and classroom initiatives. These collaborations help provide real-world learning opportunities and connect education directly to Visalia’s workforce and economy.

The event also marked Year 1 of VUSD’s strategic plan Forward 2030: A Community Driven Blueprint for the Future, a comprehensive approach to academics, engagement, and facility planning for the next five years. Some of the highlights shared included:

  • Chronic absenteeism down 3.3%
  • 92% graduation rate
  • 17% increase in active Parent Teacher Associations — now totaling more than 32 chapters
  • 13,500 students benefiting from Expanded Learning Opportunities Programs in partnership with 16 community organizations
  • Over 51% of students involved in clubs, arts, athletics, and other enrichment programs
  • $300,000 in taxpayer savings and three years of reduced payments through the strategic sale of Measure A bonds

Following the presentation, guests participated in an immersive campus tour, experiencing both modernized and non-modernized spaces at Houston Elementary. Currently, half of VUSD campuses have been modernized through past community investments in Measure E and Measure A.

“We understand that what we do as a school system directly impacts the community of Visalia,” said Superintendent Shrum. “Our success as a district impacts our home values, our ability to attract and retain business and high levels of employment in all industries; having a direct impact on our local economy. And today while we’re honoring our past we are also building our future.”
