Visalia Unified Recognized by State for Work in Supporting At-Risk Students

Visalia Unified School District (VUSD) set the standard for supporting at-risk students with the recent recognition of two of its non-traditional high schools: Creekside Community Day School and Sequoia High School. Both schools were honored by the California Department of Education (CDE) as a Model Community Day Schools (MCDS) and Model Continuation High School, respectively. These recognitions reflect VUSD’s commitment to providing a holistic approach to education, addressing the barriers students face in traditional school settings.

Creekside is one of two schools in Tulare County to receive the MCDS distinction from the state. The school focuses on providing students with a second chance and early reinstatements for students maintaining high academic standards and completing necessary community service hours. The school’s comprehensive programs include a focus on mental health support, academic enrichment, and community engagement. Students have access to counseling services, including up to six hours per week of individual and group therapy, as well as expanded electives like photography, film, and drama.

“We are incredibly proud of the work our team at Creekside does every day to support some of our most vulnerable students,” said Principal Niels Burgess. “This recognition is a testament to their dedication and the perseverance of our students, who overcome challenges to achieve academic and personal success.”

In addition to Creekside’s recognition, Sequoia High School received the Model Continuation High School designation from the state, highlighting their individualized approach to education. Through flexible and innovative learning options, Sequoia helps students find an alternative path to earning their diploma. Sequoia is one of two schools in Tulare County to receive this designation, and there are a total of 429 continuation high schools in the state of California.

“At Sequoia High School, we believe in the promise of a Fresh Start. Every day, our dedicated team ensures students feel supported, valued, and engaged in their learning. We create an environment where success can thrive by approaching each student with empathy and understanding. I genuinely believe this approach is key to our success with students,” added Sequoia Assistant Principal Yolanda Monsiviaz.

“At Visalia Unified, we believe that every student can achieve at high levels. However, every child has a different walk of life, and that means that we have a responsibility to create learning environments that provide students with the additional resources and support necessary for them to succeed. I am very proud of the work our schools are doing and look forward to the leadership our schools will provide others to help achieve this level of educational support across the state, added VUSD Board President Joy Naylor.

Both Creekside and Sequoia will now serve as resources for other districts looking to implement or improve their own alternative education programs. Both Creekside and Sequoia will be recognized at the CCEA Plus 2025 State Conference in April.
