VUSD Announces the 2026 Employees of the Year

Visalia, CA – Visalia Unified School District is proud to announce its 2026 Employees of the Year, recognizing outstanding individuals whose dedication, talent, and commitment make a lasting impact on students and school communities.

Each year, VUSD invites staff to submit nominations for this prestigious honor. A multidisciplinary committee carefully reviews submissions and selects one School Employee of the Year, one Administrator of the Year, and three Teachers of the Year representing the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Honorees receive a commemorative plaque and certificate are formally recognized at a Board of Education meeting.

The 2026 Employees of the Year are:

Susie Sanchez, Elementary Teacher of the Year
With more than 15 years of service, Ms. Sanchez has devoted her career to fostering a love of learning in her students. Beginning as an instructional aide and growing into a Master Teacher, she has led STEM Nights, coached students in Spelling Bee competitions and track, and continuously goes above and beyond for her school community. “Susie creates an environment where every child feels seen, valued, and successful,” said Mineral King Elementary Principal Silvia Duvall. “Her passion, leadership, and unwavering commitment make her a truly deserving recipient of this honor.”

Amy Awbrey, Middle School Teacher of the Year
Ms. Awbrey is recognized for the meaningful relationships she builds with students and her commitment to high-quality instruction. A dedicated educator for over a decade, she currently serves as La Joya Middle School’s Math Super Bowl coach and brings positivity, leadership, and heart to her campus each day. “Amy makes a lasting impact through her care for students and commitment to excellence,” said La Joya Middle School Principal Andrew Bishop, Ed.D. “She is an integral part of our school community.”

Stacy Gonzales, High School Teacher of the Year
Mrs. Gonzales serves as an English teacher, English Learner Coordinator, and AVID instructor, playing a critical role in supporting student achievement and college readiness. “Mrs. Gonzales represents the very best of our profession,” said Redwood High School Principal Brandon Gridiron. “She doesn’t simply teach curriculum – she builds systems, cultivates belonging, and drives measurable growth that changes trajectories for students.”

Armando Vargas, School Employee of the Year
For nearly 20 years, Mr. Vargas has quietly ensured that students and staff arrive in a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. Mr. Vargas is a site custodian at Conyer Elementary and his attention to detail and strong collaborative skills have led to several successful site visits and events on campus. “There is no one on our campus who works harder,” said Conyer Elementary Principal Carrie Stephens. “It is both the large responsibilities he manages and the small, thoughtful decisions he makes each day that truly set him apart.”

Brittney Guerrero, Administrator of the Year
Mrs. Guerrero’s motivation for becoming a Principal came after becoming a mother of two VUSD students, and realizing that as a Principal her impact and reach would extend far beyond the classroom. Her leadership is grounded in building strong relationships, supporting student success, and fostering a positive school culture. “Ms. Guerrero has a unique ability to lead with both strength and humility,” said Terri Martindale, Administrator of School Leadership. “She brings people together, keeps students at the center of every decision, and inspires excellence across her school community.”

Superintendent Kirk Shrum praised this year’s honorees, stating, “Our Employees of the Year go above and beyond the bell and approach their work with empathy and collaboration. These individuals represent the very best of Visalia Unified, and we are proud to celebrate their contributions.”

All honorees will be recognized at the Visalia Unified Board of Education meeting on April 14 at 5:30pm, held at the District Office, 5000 W. Cypress Avenue in Visalia. Family, friends, and staff are invited to attend and celebrate these exceptional educators and employees.
