VUSD Students Share Culture and Conversation with California Congressman

Ivanhoe Elementary School welcomed a special guest on Wednesday as Congressman Jim Costa of California’s 21st Congressional District visited the campus to meet with students and staff. The visit was a proud moment for Visalia Unified School District (VUSD), showcasing student talent and community connection.

Superintendent Kirk Shrum greeted Congressman Costa upon his arrival, joining Ivanhoe Elementary Assistant Principal Roel Marroquin in highlighting the school’s commitment to academic excellence and cultural celebration. One of the visit’s highlights was a vibrant performance by the school’s folklórico dance team, which presented three traditional dances for the Congressman and their families.

“We are always honored to welcome public officials at our schools,” said Superintendent Shrum. “It’s a powerful experience for our students to meet leaders who represent them in Washington and to share their stories and talents.”

During his visit, Congressman Costa spoke to students about his upbringing in the Central Valley, his experiences growing up in a farming family, and his journey to becoming a U.S. Representative. He also shared insights about his work in Washington, D.C., and the importance of civic engagement, education, and community service. Following the performance, the Congressman took time to connect with several Ivanhoe parents who were in attendance..

“Ivanhoe feels like home—it reminds me of growing up in Kearney Park. These small, hardworking communities are the backbone of the San Joaquin Valley and vital to our nation’s food supply. It was a privilege to visit Ivanhoe Elementary and meet families whose values and dedication represent the best of our region,” said Congressman Jim Costa.”

The informal exchange shows the Congressman’s understanding of the community and helps strengthen ties between schools, family members, and the policymakers of Washington.
