Teacher Residency for Rural Education
The Teacher Residency for Rural Education Project (TRRE) is for graduate students seeking to obtain:
- A single-subject credential with a focus in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).
- A master’s degree in education with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction.
- Participate in high-quality professional development in computer science.
In 2019, the Tulare County Office of Education (TCOE), in partnership with California State University, Fresno and Visalia Unified School District (VUSD), garnered a Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education. TCOE’s California Center on Teaching Careers, CSUB, and VUSD attained the five-year TQP grant to support the development and implementation of the Teacher Residency for Rural Education.
The TRRE Project’s goal is to prepare 80 single subject credential teachers during the grant period with the knowledge and skills needed to fulfill their partner districts’ hiring needs.
Residents receive a living wage stipend during the clinical experience and in return, residents must complete a three-year service agreement with the district.
TRRE residents complete a full academic year of clinical practice working with an experienced mentor teacher while taking an aligned sequence of academic coursework. TRRE residents obtain their single subject credential in english, math, or science, earn a master’s degree in education with an emphasis on curriculum and instruction, and participate in high-quality professional development in computer science.

I also like that it's a cohort program. I am sharing my experiences with all the students [who] are going through the exact same thing I am. I don't feel alone. TRRE Resident -

What attracted me to the program first was that it was closer to home, so I really liked that part. TRRE Resident -
Location
As I was looking at TRRE, I was also looking at other residency programs. And what really made TRRE stand out was the opportunity to get a master's degree. TRRE Resident -
Master's Degree
What attracted me about the program was that mentorship. I am not just thrown into the classroom by myself. I have the support of my mentor. TRRE Resident -
Mentor Support
I would say the thing that most attracted me to the program was getting paid during the student teaching. It was definitely openly advertised that this program paid the most to its residents. So, for me, it was the pay and the ability to not lose out on a year of income while studying. TRRE Resident -
Financial Assistance
I like that you're able to be in the classroom with a mentor. I think the best part of it is like, you're in there three days our of the week, and then you still have time to do coursework on Thursdays and then the opportunity to sub on Friday. I just like the way it was planned out, just because a lot of times it's kind of hard to manage your time, and they already had it set for you.TRRE Resident -
