Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program

Student Enrollment

Spanish-English DLI Program

Visalia Unified School District (VUSD) is pleased to offer this exciting program open to all families with TK and kindergarten students.

Currently we have two sites, Mountain View Elementary School (TK-3rd) and Willow Glen Elementary School (TK-1st)  where your child can attend.

A Dual Immersion Program is a way to learn academic content while acquiring another language at the same time. VUSD has adopted a two-way immersion model:

  • Student Population: Includes native speakers of both languages (50% Spanish, 50% English).
  • Instruction Model: Instruction is divided between the two languages
  • Goal: Both groups of students become proficient in both languages.

The 90:10 Dial Immersion Model

Starting in Transitional Kindergarten (TK), students and teachers engage in an environment where the language is composed of 90% Spanish and 10% English as the instructional language and mode of communication. In second grade, the language mix is 70% Spanish and 30% English. Finally, in fifth grade the goal composition is met with 50% Spanish and 50% English.

Through research it has been shown that the 90:10 model has shown to create higher levels of bi-lingualism across the country.

Our Goal

The goals of VUSD Dual Language Immersion Program is the following:

  • Bilingualism/Bi-literate and academic achievement

Students become proficient in two languages, enhancing communication and literacy skills. They often perform as well as or better than monolingual peers in standardized tests and academic subjects.

  • Cognitive and problem solving skills

  • Cultural Competence and Social Skills

Students gain a deep understanding and appreciation of different cultures, fostering empathy and better cross-cultural communication. Enhanced self-esteem and confidence through successful navigation of two languages.

  • Enhanced career and economic opportunities

Bilingual individuals have a competitive edge in the global job market and can access diverse career opportunities. Potential for higher earnings and better adaptability in various job markets.

These goals are aligned to the Guiding Principles of Dual Language Education:

  • bilingualism and biliteracy,
  • grade-level academic achievement in both languages, and
