Measure A 2018
Measure A Information
What is Measure A?
Measure A is a General Obligation bond that was on the November 2018 ballot asking Visalians to support a property tax so Visalia Unified School District can improve schools, enhance safety and provide upgraded technology. Measure A passed with more than 60% of the vote. Measure A will include upgrades to campuses across the District and make possible a new high school so that enrollments and opportunities are balanced.
The tax will apply only to property owners. The estimated cost is $36 per year per $100,000 of assessed value (not market value).
Why did VUSD need this bond measure?
- Replace leaking roofs
- Provide modern science labs and technology
- Prevent overcrowding
- Increase safety/security at all schools
- Provide equal access for students
- Improve access for children with disabilities
Matching your dollars
The State of California honors that commitment by providing matching funds. Visalians’ local investment of $105 million can then be turned into approximately $225 million to invest into quality schools. None of the funds can be used for salaries. VUSD’s AA- rating means lower interest rates.
What schools will benefit?
Every school will benefit from Measure A. While VUSD has consistently invested wisely in our campuses, 80% are over 20 years old – 60% are over 50 years old. That’s a lot of air conditioners, heaters, roofs, windows, computers and athletic facilities to upgrade.
Continued population growth will require that VUSD build a high school in the next few years. In response to community feedback, the new high school will include a pool, theater, stadium and gymnasium.
The following schools will be upgraded:
Conyer Elementary School
Crestwood Elementary School
Divisadero Middle School
Elbow Creek Elementary School
Global Learning Charter School
Golden Oak Elementary School
Green Acres Middle School
Highland Elementary School
Houston Elementary School
Hurley Elementary School
La Joya Middle School
Linwood Elementary School
Mountain View Elementary School
Mt. Whitney High School
Pinkham Elementary School
Valley Oak Middle School
Willow Glen Elementary School
