Student Transfers

• Transfers are approved only through the highest grade offered at the school for which the transfer was granted.
• 6th-grade students transitioning to middle school must apply and be approved for a transfer if they wish to attend a middle school outside their residential boundary.
• 8th-grade students transitioning to high school must apply and be approved for a transfer if they wish to attend a high school outside their residential boundary.

INTRADISTRICT TRANSFERS are transfers from one school to another within Visalia Unified School District.

INTERDISTRICT TRANSFERS are transfers either leaving or coming into Visalia Unified School District. These transfers are processed annually and are only approved for one year at a time based on space availability.

Submitting a transfer application does not guarantee an approval. Application selection is based upon a lottery. For more information about the application selection process, please refer to board policy (BP 5116.1(a)). 

You must enroll your student in their home school for the fall semester. When transfer requests exceed available space, families will receive a denied transfer. 

Once a transfer is approved, families must contact the new school within 10 school days to complete enrollment. Failure to do so may result in the transfer being voided if space is no longer available.

Transfer requests for the 2026-2027 school year will only be accepted December 1, 2025 through March 1, 2026. Please note, some schools may be closed to transfers due to enrollment capacity. Should you attempt to submit an application for a closed school, the online system will redirect you to apply for a school that is available.

All new incoming interdistrict transfers need to:

1. Apply for an interdistrict agreement from their district of residence first.
2. If approved, the district of residence will then send the interdistrict agreement to VUSD.
3. Upon receipt of the approved interdistrict agreement from the district of residence, VUSD then approves or denies based on space availability.
4. VUSD then notifies the parent of approval or denial by the May 17 deadline.

Please note, if approved and the requested school is not available due to space, an alternative school may be offered. For each following year, student will need to apply for a renewal in order to remain in VUSD. All new incoming interdistrict transfers are subject to review of grades, attendance and behavior prior to approval. If approved, student will be required to adhere to attendance and behavior criteria or be subject to revocation.

Yes, all renewal interdistrict transfers must re-apply with the district of residence on an annual basis. If approved for renewal by district of residence, VUSD will review student grades, attendance and behavior to determine the approval for renewal.

1. Visit www.vusd.org
2. Click the “Student Enrollment” button in the top right corner.
3. Scroll down and select “Learn More About Student Transfers.”
4. On the Student Transfers page, scroll to “Apply for a Transfer” and click the button.
5. Follow the instructions to complete your application.

If you already have a PowerSchool Parent Portal account, log in and select “School Choice” to apply for the 2026–2027 school year.
