• All elementary and secondary instrumental and choral music will be provided in person. 

    Choral Groups

    All choral music must be conducted in one of the following settings: 

    • Indoors. Facial coverings must be worn at all times while singing indoors. Students must wear a mask or a face shield with a drape at all times when singing. An accommodation for a face shield with a drape is not required for students when using the face shield and drape during choral instruction. Physical Distance of 3 feet between students should be provided, when feasible. 

    • Outdoors. Masks are optional when singing outdoors. Students may choose to wear a mask at any time.  Physical distancing is recommended, when feasible.

    • No mass gatherings. Any planned in-person performance/event must be approved through the district. All requests are to be sent to the Director of HRD. 

    • All VUSD established COVID protocols and procedures must be followed.

    • Students who do not feel well should not participate and be sent to the nurse for assessment. 

     

    Orchestra (strings only) and Percussion

    Orchestra and Percussion may be held indoors. 

    • Masks are to be worn at all times indoors. 

    • No sharing of instruments. 

    • If multiple individuals must use the same piece of equipment, the staff leader shall ensure that all students use hand sanitizer. 

    • Encourage frequent hand hygiene- Hand sanitizer must be available for use. 

    • No mass gatherings. Any planned in-person performance must be approved through the district. All requests are to be sent to the Director of HRD. 

    • All VUSD established COVID protocols and procedures must be followed

    • Students who do not feel well should not participate and be sent to the nurse for assessment. 

     

    Instrumental Music, Winds and Brass

    All instrumental music, including winds and brass may be conducted in one of the following settings: 

    • Outdoors.  Masks are optional when playing outdoors. Students may choose to wear a mask at any time. Physical distancing is recommended, when feasible. 

    • Indoors.  Indoor settings may be used for instructional purposes when there is no instrument playing. Facial coverings are required at all times. *The district is currently working with the local health department to update guidance for indoor settings.  

    • A signed informed consent must be on file for all participating instrument playing students.

    • Instruments must be taken in their case to the individually designated student space. Instruments will be put together and taken apart in the designated space. Cases will remain in the designated space during the playing session.

    • Students must have their own reeds, mouthpieces, mallets and sticks and may not share or borrow instruments.

    • Large instruments, tubas, sousaphones, routinely not in cases, will be taken to designated space and returned to the band room after session.

    • Established classroom entrance and exit paths for instrument pick up and drop off must be clearly marked with directional arrows. This does not apply to elementary school settings. 

    • Hand sanitizer will be used when entering the classroom for instrument pick up and when exiting after instrument drop off.

    • Students who do not feel well should not participate and be sent to the nurse for assessment.
