Election & Political Information
As we enter into another election season, we aim to provide clarity for our students, staff, families, and community. Below you will find a list of answers to commonly asked questions and some additional helpful information. We respect and value individuals’ various viewpoints about issues that pertain to our schools, community, and the nation. This guidance is intended to help us, more effectively and appropriately, engage in political activities during the election season.
The following questions and answers are provided as general information regarding District Board policy. The underlying law and policy in this area is complex and often requires detailed analysis of the underlying questions and issues. Individual circumstances related to the guidance below will be addressed on a case by case basis in accordance with Board policy.
Students & Families
- Are students allowed to wear pro-candidate stickers or other items/clothing that show political candidate/party support?
- What if a student is wearing clothing that promotes a political candidate/political position and this is creating a disturbance in a classroom or during unstructured time?
- May parents request to have their child excused from school on the day of elections "for safety purposes"? Is this an excused absence?
- When does student political speech become hate speech?
- May students leave class to demonstrate? Is that an excused absence?
