VUSD Summer School 2020

Information regarding the VUSD 2020 Summer School program is listed below.  The first text is a copy of the summer school letter that was mailed home. The 2nd text has Frequently Asked Questions regarding the summer school program.

 

 

Online Students (Students who are advancing in World History, US History, Civics & Econ as well as anyone taking Math or PE)- Do NOT pick up packets. Online students do not begin the summer session until 06/09/20. They need to monitor their VUSD student email account for further instructions and communications from teaching staff.

 

 

 

 

1) Example of Summer School Letter:

We are pleased to inform you that you have been enrolled in the Summer School program. High school summer school courses will take place through a distance-learning formats. Classes will be held online or using paper packets and will count for credits with letter grade. Summer school will not include traditional face-to face instruction or classroom setting.

 

The pacing of summer school is substantially faster than during the regular year. Students and parent/guardian understand that this is a rigorous course that requires self-motivation and independent work in order to successfully complete the class. The student agrees to maintain a passing grade in the course and complete assignments as indicated by their teacher.

 

Independent Study-(IS) will offer English, Science, and Health. (Wld. and US repeat only)The student will be required to work at home and complete one assignment a day for a total of five assignments a week. Assignments will be distributed the week of May 26th.. Message will be sent via blackboard. This was at the time the letter was mailed.  We then sent out a message for just the IS students.

Students enrolled in  Biology, Health or Earth Science will pick up at El Diamante. 5/29  8am-12 pm

Students enrolled in English 1, English 2, American Lit., World History IS (repeat), or US History IS (repeat) pick up at Mount Whitney. 5/28 8am-12pm

In the packet, you will find the first 5 assignments of the course you have been assigned to for summer school. There will be a total of 15 assignments in all for this course that you must complete to receive a final grade. You must complete 5 assignments each week to remain on track with the course. If you fail to stay on track you may be dropped from the course. You will be completing all of your work at home; there will be no classroom instruction.  Your teacher will contact you at least twice a week to check on your progress and provide you with directions on completing your assignments. You may also email the teacher. In order to receive full credit for your assignments, you must:

  • Complete all assignments in full. 

  • All answers need to be in complete sentences.

  • All handwriting must be legible.

If you get stuck on a question and cannot find the answer in the book, you may use the internet to help you with your as. ssignment. Please review the schedule below of this letter for the pickup and drop off of assignment

Online-OL (Edgenuity) will offer World History, US History, Econ/Civics, Math 1, Math 2, Math 3, and PE 2. The student will be required to work for an average of 3-5 hours a day. Math courses will require additional “tutorials”. -Your teacher will communicate with you about making tests and assessments available to you.  As this is an online course, there is no direct instruction or tutoring that is part of the course. For those students remediating a math course, there will be some limited instruction and tutoring.  

 

Please see below for requirements to complete the online course: 

  • A reliable working computer and internet at home that can support Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox is mandatory.

  • Students should expect to work roughly 3-5 hours each day, Monday-Thursday, for 6 weeks in order to complete all coursework.

  • If a student does not complete the required work each week and falls more than 1 section behind, the student may be dropped and receive a NG on their transcript and no credit for the course.

  • A pacing guide will be provided by the online teacher.

 

 

2) SUMMER SCHOOL 2020- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. Did my student get into summer school? Summer school letters are scheduled to be mailed on the week on May 18th. Did they change their address? Students should also check their school emails for confirmation.
  2. What is OL or IS? OL signifies you’re the class is online through the Edgenuity program. IS refers to Independent Study or packet work.
  3. Why is my student not enrolled at the summer site where the majority of their peers are attending? There are no on campus courses this summer. It is all distance learning.
  4. How often do I need to log in if I am an online student? Students are encouraged to log in as many times as they need to. Teachers will be monitoring student log ins.
  5. Can I switch the semester that my student is taking health? We would not be able to do this. Health is a semester class (3 weeks). No changes will be made.
  6. It is not fair that my student did not get a spot in summer school, why did my child not get in and others did? This year summer school was open enrollment. Students and parents had multiple opportunities to enroll in summer
  7. We weren’t able to pick up the packet or online information. Can we still get that and where? Distribution of packets will be May 28th for English 1, English 2, American Lit., World History IS, or US History IS pick up atMountWhitney and May 29th for Biology, Health or Earth Science at El Diamante. Online will be the first week in June. Students who did not pick up packets on May 28th/29th will be dropped. Attendance will be taken via work completion. If a student falls a week being they may be dropped.
